Whose Side Are You On?

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 7:21.

During the US civil war Abraham Lincoln met with a group of ministers for a prayer breakfast. Lincoln was not a church-goer but was a man of deep, if at times unorthodox, faith.

At one point one of the ministers said, “Mr. President, let us pray that God is on our side”.

Lincoln’s response showed far greater insight, “No, gentlemen, let us pray that we are on God’s side.”

Lincoln reminded those ministers that religion is not a tool by which we get God to do what we want but an invitation to open ourselves to being and doing what God wants.

John F. Kennedy rightly said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.

Are we not the same? Always me, me and myself.

We want God to be on our side but when it’s our turn, we keep him a cold shoulder. We just want everything to be done for us but we don’t want to lift a finger to do the will of God.

Romans 8:31 says, “…if God is for us, who can be against us?............How true! He is for us.

But are we?

Blessed Day!
